Digital Product

Tell customers exactly what they're buying

Digital products can't be picked up and examined before purchase, so a clear description is especially important. Explain what the files contain, how they're supplied and what the customer can do with them.

Tip: Avoid relying on phrases such as "instant download" alone. Tell customers what they'll actually receive.

What's included?

A simple list can make the contents of a digital product much easier to understand:

  • Main product file
  • Instructions or user guide
  • Alternative sizes or formats where applicable
  • Supporting resources
  • Any bonus files included with the purchase

Include practical information

List the individual files or groups of files included in the purchase and briefly explain what each is for.

State the formats supplied, such as PDF, JPG, PNG, ZIP or another appropriate format. Include approximate file sizes where that information would be useful.

Explain whether the customer needs particular software, equipment, an account with another service or any technical knowledge to use the files.

Explain when and how customers receive access to their purchased files and where they should go if they need help.

Show customers what they're getting

Use product images to preview the contents without giving away the purchased files themselves. Depending on the product, useful previews might include screenshots, sample pages, finished examples or close-up details.

A demonstration video can also be useful when the product benefits from being seen in use.

Free samples and paid files are different

If you offer a genuinely free sample, it can be made available as a normal public download. Files that form part of a paid product should instead be delivered through the protected purchase and download process.

Don't accidentally place the full paid product into a publicly accessible page download simply because you want customers to see what is included.

Before publishing a digital product

  • Check that every promised file is included.
  • Open and test the files yourself.
  • Clearly state the formats supplied.
  • Explain any software or compatibility requirements.
  • Use preview images that accurately represent the product.
  • Check the price and product description.
  • Complete a test purchase and download.
  • Make sure customers can find appropriate help if they have a problem.

For digital products, clarity is part of the product. Customers should know what they'll receive and how they'll use it before they click buy.

Sell files that customers can access after purchase. A good digital product page explains exactly what's included, the file formats supplied and anything the customer needs in order to use them.

Be particularly clear about what the customer will receive before they buy.

Bundle

Bundles encourage customers to buy related products together by offering an automatic saving. Choose the products and quantities that make up the bundle, then set either a percentage or fixed discount. When the required combination is added to the customer's basket, the bundle saving is applied automatically. They're useful for starter sets, complementary products, gift collections and other items that make sense to buy together.
